The latest achievement of laser surgery, LASEK procedure is the method to correct more serious defects in cases when LASIK method cannot be used for various reasons.
During the LASEK procedure, the layer of cells (epithelium) is temporarily folded aside from the surface of the cornea and the laser is applied, similarly as in the PRK method. The epithelium is folded aside only for the period when the laser is used, and is put back as soon as lasering is over. After the surgery the patient has to wear a special contact lens on the treated eye for about 7 days. The lens and the epithelium put on the surface of the cornea after the procedure act as a dressing. The procedure lasts about 15 minutes and is pain-free.
The healing period is longer than that required after the LASIK procedure.
